Well, Election 2016 is FINALLY over! Half of us are thrilled, and half of us are dealing with the pain of losing! So, the question now is “Where do we go from here?” My hope and my prayer is that both sides of the outcome of the election will come together at an altar!
I fully believe that many evangelical followers of Jesus have bowed their heads in prayer over this election more than any prior election! I will even go out on a limb and say that Americans have probably prayed more over the past few months than at any time since the days and weeks following 9/11! I am thankful for that, and whether our candidate won or lost, we must conclude that God heard our prayers, and has responded according to His plan! We must not, and cannot question God’s sovereignty in matters such as this, regardless of whether we are Republican or Democrat; nothing happens that is beyond God’s sovereignty and control! But again, the question: “Where do we go from here?” As the weeks and months passed following 9/11, we watched our nation slowly attempt to recoup and rebuild; the tragedy that brought us to our knees eventually began to fade into the pursuit of those who perpetrated the evil, as well as into the rebuilding of our towers, the national symbols of our strength and prosperity.
I recently completed reading a book called “The Harbinger”, a fictional account of a prophetic warning to America regarding our political, moral, and spiritual decline as a nation. If you have perhaps read this book, whether or not you agree with its prophetic message in its entirety, I think we would do well to at least consider the possibility that God, in His mercy, deeply desires that we as a nation return to our spiritual foundations, and turn back to God! That is exactly the “lens” through which I choose to look at this year’s election: God is extending to America the opportunity of another chance! It seems as if I’ve quoted II Chronicles 7.14 a hundred times in the past couple of months, but it truly lays the groundwork for what it will take for Americans to make the most of God’s offer of another chance: “If My people, which are called by My Name, will humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, THEN will I hear from Heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” Our history as Americans indicates that we have been the most blessed nation on the face of the Earth; even though we still experience much of that blessing, we have been on a slippery slope of turning from the Source of that blessing in recent years. When tragedy strikes us, we remember that Source, and turn our heads to Heaven for His healing and guidance; all-too-soon, however, we gradually take our eyes off of God, and return to our decline!
That is why I am choosing to look at the results of this election as an opportunity to make the most of God’s merciful extension of another chance! It’s another chance to get it right; to realize that God has heard and responded to our prayers, and if we will but continue to pray and seek His face, we will begin to see His healing come to our divisions; His power to overcome evil; and His restoration of what has made us the greatest nation in the history of the world! I hope and pray that you will join me in a renewed focus of prayer for our nation, our newly-elected President, and our new Congress. When we commit ourselves to that focus, we will find a new desire to love each other, regardless of political persuasion, race, religion, or creed! It’s time for us to unify, to come together as Americans, and to return to the foundations upon which we were formed. It's another opportunity to share the Gospel with our world, and to redeem whatever time God has given us to carry out His plan for reaching the lost! May God’s perfect will be accomplished, and may God bless the United States of America!!
